The Times - Language and Representations

 Language

1) What is the main story on the front cover of the Times CSP edition and why does it appeal to Times readers?

The main story is about the Post office scandal and mentions how the chief might give up her CBE. This appeals to the times readers as they don't talk about the victim but talk about the political aspects of the scandal, this allows the broadsheet to cover hard news. This appeals to the readers of The Times.

2) How is the presentation of this story different to how the Daily Mirror presents it?

The mirror paints her as the villain and the Times paint her as someone who has been told to apologise. In the Times, she isn't viewed as bad or good she is somewhat a neutral 'character'.

3) How is the Times front page designed to reflect broadsheet newspaper conventions?

One image
- Heavy text
- mathshead
- byline
- price

4) How can you tell the inside pages of the Times are a broadsheet newspaper?

Only a total of 3 images, broadsheets tend to only have a small amount
There is a lot of text, broadsheets tend to use the space for text as they use more advanced language

The focus on text allows us to tell it is a broadsheet as the audience are higher educated so they will use this language and also the Times cover more hard news so they will need to use heavy language to convey the story.

5) What does a close analysis of the news stories in the Times CSP edition suggest about the Times's political beliefs?

It suggests that they are more right wing and so they are leaning towards conservatives. They aim to undermine the opposing parties most notably the Labour party. The Times doesn't talk about how there was conservative influence during the scandal so they don't give any blame to them and their political bias lines up with conservatives. They also give Vennells who is a conservative a platform to speak out.

Representations

1)
How does the Times represent the Post Office workers and Fujitsu in the CSP pages?

They paint them as villains as they are the ones who were actually working with the tech. It redirects the blame away from Vennells and towards Gareth Jenkins (IT expert). They are giving another face to hate and blame and they use an image of him looking guilty and trying to hide away to make him seem more at blame than vennells.

2) What representation of the Conservative Party can be found in the CSP pages of the Times?

It represents them as the hero's of the situation, and they attempt to shift the blame away from the Conservatives. They point out that it started under a coalition and so the Conservatives aren't to blame for this. They also give Vennells a voice to clear her name, this paints them as the innocent ones who are not to blame for the situation.

3) Consider the subheading about Vennells "Vennells faces call..." - How does this newspaper present her involvement in this story?

It presents her as not the person to blame, they paints it more as if she was just there by coincidence. They make her seem like part of the solution instead of the problem. It makes her look like the person who is facing consequences from the situation even though she wasn't involved all to much. The subheading is an objective stance, it isn't stating whether she should or shouldn't return the money and give up her CBE.

4) What representation of Fujitsu can be found in the CSP pages of the Times? What does The Times journalist think of Fujitsu and Horizon's role in this scandal?

Fujutsu has a lack of mentioning as the Conservatives have contracts with Fujutsu so they do not want to put them in the limelight. They aim to focus the blame onto the actual individuals who worked as the IT experts. Fujustu are represented as innocent as it was the actual individuals who caused the scandal, not the company.

5) What opinion would Times readers be likely to have about Vennells, the Post Office workers and Fujitsu from reading these pages?

Vennells: They believe that she isn't at blame at all and that she shouldn't have to give up her CBE
Post Office workers: They believe that they should be to blame as they are the main reason for the scandal. The readers will view them as the true culprits
Fujutsu: A good company who could have went down because of bad workers and individuals
