Summer Project: coursework planning

 1) Research: Music videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

Right at the beginning they use dialog which is diegetic sounds to set the scene and mood for the rest of the music video and use the name " SCILENCERS " to make them seem like a power hungry and abusive police force to make them the villain of the music video and make the civilians look like the innocent people that have feel under rule of the police. The whole starting dialog pints the picture of whose good and whose not. This engages the audience as we wonder why they abuse power, why this is happening and how this situation is going to end. The phrase " one final push of unity could be the hope we all need " adds enigma codes as we wonder what is going to happen as it cuts to someone else, it also adds action codes as it hints at something happening. Someone starts running with a device in their hands and attempt to run away and this adds tension and engages the audience as it builds up all the initial questions and thoughts they had. After she got captured it cuts to this man helping her and taking off the metal plate on her mouth. We wonder who this was. The ending solves the dis- equilibrium and ends the narrative with the citizens triumphing over the police.

Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.

At the beginning of the music video and throughout it they consistently use a handheld camera, they keep the actors/singer in the centre of the screen (CLAMPS) and make them the main focus of the video and to make it a performance rather than a narrative ,like the pervious Tongue Tied music video. Even near the end, when there was confetti everywhere they still kept the one band members on the centre of the screen at all times, also they managed to keep them centralised even when they were getting close up shots of the instruments they were playing by keeping their hands or some part of their body on the screen to keep making the performance and song the main focus and to keep the other things like the confetti as a second focus. Also, when the whole band comes in you can see them smiling and laughing at each other ( character expression ), which creates a sense of authenticity in their music and makes it seem like they are good friends.

Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?

Initially, they employ fast-paced editing and clips of them playing the instrument, which stimulate the audience and keep them engaged. Then unexpectedly cuts to the singer doing an unusual dancing sequence, which confuses the audience and engages them to watch on as they would want to see if there is an answer as to why the man was dancing strangely. Right after this we see the band members  walking on and on for what seems like infinity then using editing they randomly cut the next clip to the band member in an unusual pose and we see them acting unusual. This shifts the music video from what initially was somewhat a performance to a narrative. The choice of clips juxtaposes each other as first they seemed like an ordinary band and now there is something eerie and unusual about them. Then it shows both versions of the band singing after one and other to engage the audience into pondering about what it could possibly mean.

Music video 4: Your choice

Ed Sheeran's Shape of You utilises narrative to engage the audience as it shows a romantic relationship between Ed Sheeran and the girl. Around a minute into the music video, it shows them two making eye contact and smiling at each other, which hints at a relationship between them and engages the audience as we would want to see how they end up at the end of the narrative. Later on we see that the girl has left and left him a mouthguard as a small gift and we can see that Ed Sheeran was disheartened due to her departure, and we want to know what he is now training so hard for and who he is going to fight. We find out that he has to fight a sumo wrestler and he ends up losing but the girl comes back and helps him. The narrative used Todorov's Equilibrium theory as in the end she came back and helped him.

2) Music video planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen:

Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.):

parts or both

Link to brief (one small step to improving your community):

global warming and street pollution

Actors/performers you plan to use:

myself, maybe my siblings and some friends

Locations:

home, park, store and maybe a shopping center

Costume/make-up/props required:

different set of clothes, bottle, full black outfit

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

I have not yet decided on what artist or song i will use but i do have a clear idea of what i am going to do. I have decided to chose the theme of global warming and street pollution. My video will include raw footage and clips of the streets and roads with no tweaks to show the awful state that we leave our local areas in and to highlight on  the impacts it has and can have in the near future if its unchanged.

I will use different camera angles especially low angles to make the message look and feel more powerful and to hopefully change others perspectives on the environment and our more local areas for the better.I will also use an establishing shot to get a wider image of the state of our areas. This will also allow my message to speak more powerfully. Throughout the music video i will keep a serious face to show that this is no laughing matter and to create a more serious undertone of the music video. I will also wear a black t-shirt and black bottoms in order to have connotations towards funerals, as if we overlook this factor, it could lead to the ' death ' of the world. I will also utilize faster paced editing and the beginning and gradually shift to a more slower pace towords the end to highlight on the very limited time we may have.

I will be representing the teenagers and people around the age of 13-17 because as a teenager myself i can confirm than we do not give enough care into the environment around us as we should. I am also attempting to represent the less fortunate as I share blood with people in Sri Lanka and i will show that we shouldn't take the comfortable environment around us for granted.

My target audience is for people around my age and i will offer diversion through the song and the initial fast paced editing to hit dopamine rushes and I will offer surveillance through the deep messages and will offer relationship and identity through our age similarities and interests.
